In the 1920’s this was used as a Holding point for George Bruce Chapman who was an Animal Dealer and Circus proprietor … Rather infamously in 1928 there was an escape of one of his brown bears which caused a massive bear hunt and of course massive scare in the area … By 1930 Withdean Hall was a preparatory school for boys … during World War 2 it became a billet for troops and in the 1950’s it was turned into flats … During the 1930’s the large grounds around the hall was used to build Varndean Gardens and Withdean Crescent
