Open 1936-1939 (aprox) and 1947-1952 … This establishment was finally given the green light to go ahead when Alderman Sir Herbert Carden put his proposal forward for a Sports complex , Zoo , Botanical Gardens and outdoor swimming baths … The plans were agreed by the council ..little is known of what animals were kept at the Zoo in the beginning apart from Snakes which had to be destroyed when the Second World War began in 1939 and the Zoo was closed … In 1947 Mr Fred White and Mr Denis Mitchell resurrected the zoo on the 25 acre site and there were domestic farm animals and definitely a Black Panther and Hyenas … in 1948 the Zoo was officially relaunched and guessing that this was not successful it was relaunched again in 1949 now there were Lions , Bears, Monkeys , Birds and the domestic farm animals ….Unfortunately the Zoo was pretty short lived as in 1952 it was closed down and never reopened
